Born and raised in Detroit to a working-class family, Angela understands firsthand the challenges and aspirations of the people she serves. Her commitment to equity, opportunity, and community empowerment has shaped her career in education, law, nonprofit leadership, and public service.
Angela spent over a decade in the Detroit Public Schools district, where she was dedicated to shaping young minds and advocating for quality education. She later transitioned into leadership roles in human resources, entrepreneurship, and community advocacy, using her legal expertise to advance policies that support working families, small businesses, and neighborhood development.
Driven by a passion for service, Angela was elected to the Detroit City Council, where she fights for policies that support small businesses, strengthen education, and drive community development. She believes that a thriving Detroit begins with investing in its people—ensuring they have access to the resources, opportunities, and support they need to succeed.
In 2023, Angela introduced the resolution to establish the Detroit Women’s Commission, recognizing that women are the backbone of our communities yet have often been overlooked in policy decisions that directly impact their lives. Collaborating with the Duggan administration, she helped create this nine-member advisory body to confront and address critical issues affecting the socioeconomic lives of women across the city, including the pay gap, reproductive access, housing instability, public safety, maternal mortality, and mental health.
Angela has been at the forefront of grassroots efforts to uplift Detroit’s communities. Her leadership focuses on:
-
Economic Empowerment – Supporting small businesses and initiatives that uplift working families.
-
Public Safety and Stronger Neighborhoods – Committed to creating safer streets, expanding community resources, and ensuring access to truly affordable, high-quality housing.
-
Access to Employment – Ensuring Detroit offers career pathways and good-paying jobs.
Angela is a proud graduate of Cooley High School, Spelman College, the Detroit College of Law, and The Campaign School at Yale. Angela is a 2024 Hunt Institute Fellow and she is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc., NAACP, National Alumnae Association of Spelman College – Detroit Chapter, the National Association of Hearing Officers, and the United Nations Association.
