Cashless Business Ban
Angela Whitfield Calloway championed the Cashless Ban, a policy ensuring that all Detroit businesses accept cash as a form of payment. Recognizing that cashless transactions can exclude low-income residents, seniors, and those without access to banking services, she fought to make Detroit a more inclusive and equitable city. The ordinance prevents businesses from refusing cash payments, protecting consumer rights and ensuring that all Detroiters—regardless of their financial situation—can fully participate in the local economy.

Marijuana & Vaping Billboard Regulation
Angela Whitfield Calloway led the passage of an ordinance that restricts marijuana and vaping advertisements within 1,000 feet of schools, parks, libraries, playgrounds, and other areas where children gather. Humane Pet Shop Ordinance
Angela Whitfield Calloway championed the Humane Pet Shop Ordinance to proactively protect animals and consumers by prohibiting the sale of puppies and kittens in pet shops. At the time of implementation, Detroit had no pet shops selling cats or dogs, making this a strategic, preventive measure. Similar ordinances were already active in ten Michigan communities, including some bordering Detroit. By acting early, this ordinance helps prevent future problems, encourages the growth of humane, responsible businesses, and addresses the city’s broader challenge of stray animals — reducing the burden on Detroit Animal Care and Control and decreasing the need for euthanasia.
Paid Parental Leave for City Employees
Angela Whitfield Calloway successfully led the charge to secure six weeks of paid parental leave for City of Detroit employees, a significant step toward supporting working families. She championed the policy to ensure that city employees can take the necessary time to care for and bond with their newborn or newly adopted children without facing financial strain. This landmark achievement modernizes the city's workplace policies, improves employee retention, and reinforces Detroit’s commitment to being a compassionate and competitive employer that prioritizes the well-being of its workforce.
